Woodcock and Snipe Shooting in County Sligo, Southern Ireland

This fantastic country house which has always provided varied and exciting rough shooting. The atmosphere is of a 'yesteryear shooting party'.

The woodcock, which is always driven, is a mix of natural woodland on Temple House, surrounds and some carefully selected forestry in the area. You will see some lovely country.

Snipe is both driven and walked up.

Depending on the weather we may also get some duck on Temple House Lake and Owenmore River - not huge numbers but it is great fun.

Temple House always provides varied and exciting rough shooting but it should be remembered that woodcock, snipe and duck are migratory birds and they are very dependent on the weather. Therefore no guarantee as to numbers can, in all fairness, be given. The bag is also dependent on the skill of the guns. Nevertheless we usually see enough for everybody to go home happy! Best time of Season between November - January, dogs included free.

The intention is to create a home from home - a house party really. Our rates are full board - you just add drink. We leave the house at 9.30, usually return for a proper sit down lunch - and then keep going until dark. You may then sample the black stuff in a local pub before returning to change for dinner. A deep bath or a power shower is well deserved followed by an exquisite dinner that rounds off the day nicely - the finer the wine (we have a wine list), the greater the stories. Open fires, and possibly a brandy, prepare you for a good night's sleep.

Guns and companions arrive in time for dinner on the night before shooting and depart after breakfast on the morning following the last shooting day.

Food

Meals are thoughtfully prepared and can be described as country house style, with a modern Irish twist. Ingredients are grown on the estate, sourced locally or from specialist producers, and where possible are organic.

We cater for vegetarians and dietary requirements with advance notice. A particular favourite at breakfast is the freshly stewed rhubarb or apple, possibly with our homemade granola. Homemade breads, scones and the full Irish breakfast will be sure to set you up well for the rest of the day.

Packed lunches are available for fishing parties by prior arrangement.

Dinner is an experience in itself. It is customary to gather in the morning room for a pre-dinner drink and an opportunity to meet the other guests. Discover what is on the menu that evening and select your wine. Guests dine together at a vast mahogany table and the atmosphere is that of a friendly house party.
